another day at the opera

mar 30, 2006
did not run, again
had 2 excuses, rain and quarterly company function
hardly attend our quarterly company functions anymore
but this was different, 1 of the award winners was a friend
a deserving one, any less derserving i would not attend
when the function was about to end, my mobile rang
unlisted number, answered anyway, some guy spoke
could not understand and could not identify voice
i replied in an unfriendly tone, hello who is this?
its me kenneth
i immediately sneaked out of the conference room
sat comfortably on the sofa, smiling from head to toe
its like the whole body just relaxed
and i think there is a chemical released when we are happy
lets call it hphins short for happyphins
unlike endorphins that takes time as u need to exercise
hphins takes instant effect when a person is happy
its like in movies, when the person is happy/in love
they usually show in slow motion, no/faint audible sound,
soft music or song, dreamy gaze etc etc
could not remember everything he said but
basically he called to say hi and find out how are things
how kind of him i have to say
not many do such things anymore, not even me
i hardly/don't call my mom, dad, sisters, brothers,
relatives, friends, etc etc to just say hi, how are things?
perhaps i m making a mountain out of a phone call
anyway it was a pleasant surprise indeed

i get excited

mar 29, 2006
supposed to run today
even more thrilled when cheong mentioned he was gonna run too
we were sending emails updating each other on our workload
ensuring that we would be able to go for the run
i was excited and looking forward to the run
typing this, i just remembered something, actually someone
months back, while waiting for my wife, i spotted this fella
smiling, there was a  glow on his face, truly excited expression
rushing off to his car to head to pandan track
it was justin!
miss all of them, many were once regulars at klcc track

about 5pm my supervisor said out loud that he wanted go back/home
his eyes focus on me, smiling, asking if it was ok
it would mean i have to cover him until 7pm instead of my usual 6pm
he further added that he wanted to spend more time with his son
as his son was going away to camp school tomorrow
how to say no to that, so i agreed
sadly i email cheong about the bad news
to my surprise cheong replied that he could not run too,
due to a request from his supervisor
after my supervisors left i put on some opera music, loudly
expressing/feeling disappointment for missing the run

the day after

monday 27 mar 2006
did 5 laps + 1 with cheong, aeow and cs wong
cheong and i attended a wedding on sunday
we had a couple of drinks (red wine & chivas)
we were tired and still feeling the effects on monday
noticed cheong running efficiently, his form better
seems to be effortless, this lanky 6 footer,
of course when asked, cheong says he is 5 and 11 half inches
or something like that, that's how honest and specific he is
with his company 5 laps was over pretty fast, chat at der bench
cheong pointed out it was a beautiful day
clear skies, no haze, not sunny/hot
we somewhat regret that we only did 5 laps
cs wong appeared and we joined him for 1 lap
another satisfying run, thanks to cheong

smile

did 12 laps as planned
i usually run clockwise direction
it was a smiling day
i smiled to at least 10 runners/walkers
mmm...let's see :-
- draco
- 2 hong leong girls
- 3 ladies (rohaizad's friends)
2 indian 1 chinese
- 1 pleasant girl, stranger
1st time see her already smile back!
- 1 girl, stranger
seen her a few times
- 1 mat salleh guy, stranger
- yunus, regular at klcc
usually wear dark vest & shorts, moustache
wears ascis shoes
- totally blonde hair lady, quite regular
- chinese old man, regular
usually wears white tee with crocodile logo
- probably a few more others

after completing the laps i was stretching near der bench
surprisingly yunus came over to chat
having done 12 laps i proudly announce my age 41 when asked
oh u are young i m 50 yunus declared
i was stunned for a moment and then complimented his young looks
not so proud i announced 58 minutes as my best official 10km timing
oh that's very slow yunus smiled
i m sure u can be faster
usually i see that u take easy slow runs
u must do intervals, that's the key, try it out
feeling quite encouraged and at the same time not (is it possible!)
i left at least satisfied i have completed as planned for the day

give me wealth

did 6 laps
i thought i did 5 laps only
did a few laps with lauren
lauren is slim, nice running form & light footed
she seems to know what i m talking about, running that is
its because her uncles and friends have thought her well
a runner during school days and have completed 2 half marathons
and probably many 10kms
she is starting to run again
and would like to train more and then participate in 10kms
well done lauren!

oh ya ronnie was hill training
he was slowly jogging down the slope from the 300m to 400m
and then charging up the slope

rachel was also there running laps not hill train
and probably also giving support to ronnie

give me strength

mar 17 2006
did 11 laps alone instead of the planned 12
started around 5.15pm in order to complete the slow long run
surprisingly there were more than expected
people already running during this time
mostly malay ladies
covered in tudung with either long sleeve tees
or track pants or both, wow hot stuff
well at least they were there
as i was about to complete the 1st lap
noticed running on opposite direction was my colleague
a senior/management staff, at this hour?, running!
something quite uncommon in our company
even for non-management staff like me
usually some will say
nothing to do ah?
so free?
wow you are so lucky can go off now!
and so on, i could not be bothered
of course there are also the kind souls that
give the thumbs up or
pat on the back or
obliging smile and nod
after a few laps met smiling ronnie running on the opposite direction
as i look across my shoulder to the right
i could hear the screams & giggles of many children at the wading pool
possibly because of the school holidays and also
parents trying to make up time in our hectic lifestyle
after 6 laps, to avoid the feeling of boredom doing this mundane exercise
i kept 'busy' by trying to focus on my surroundings
welcoming the slightest breeze
change in the sun rays
tourist arching/sitting/lying to snap a shot of the two towers(lotr)
noticing a few fair ladies with complexion color like beancurd, mmm...yummy
the mynah birds fighting, i think
feeling the ache in my body/legs, listening to my breathing, inhaling generously
and so on
maybe this is what it means a peace of mind, be one with nature, surroundings
maybe that is why its pleasureable, appealing, cleansing, noticing the small things
by the last few laps bryan appeared, tall australian chap, nice fella
and who is that sitting at der bench, its buluman, smart long slacks & black tee
he came to collect the power run stuff from our ever helpful ronnie
by the 11 lap something was stiff, the neck
i called it a day, satisfied as usual until the next run

give me light

do unto others what u want others to do unto u
this wise saying is from confucius
but i find it difficult to apply to some people?
i feel like giving them what they gave me, sometimes i do
do i do what others do unto me?
like when bosses make me feel so small
do i make them feel even smaller?
like when the person crossing the road stop to smell the roses
there are no roses on the road
go to a garden, there are no cars there, lie down for all i care
can u just walk faster if not run
do i give a rude honk?
do i barely knock the person to show my frustration?
like when the rude ftaaa say something nasty
(almost every year or is it every event?)
do i say something even worst?
like when the specialist said that my joints were perfectly ok
he said 'there should be no problem, its just once off'
hello i have mentioned that this once in a blue moon pains have been > 10 years
at least admit u don't know and refer me to someone else
do i knock his head with the stick that he use to knock my knee?

let there be love

did 5 interval laps alone
smiling ronnie & draco running opposite direction
this is probably my 2nd time running intervals
it was no easy task for me
after the 3rd lap i was tempted to call it a day
it shows how new i m to running faster than normal
but i m glad i hung in there n
managed to complete as planned

long time ago.....
the 1st interval run was with jamie
we did 3 interval laps

Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments

- Jim Rohn

pacesetters 15km run

my 1st pacesetter 15km run was year 2004
i loved it
if there is 1 race i have to choose this would be the one
the reason is bcoz pacesetters organise the run so well
in my opinion, pacesetters deliver what they promised
visit their website http://www.pacesetters.com.my/
this year the run is scheduled for may 21
registration is open now and limited to 1500 entries only
so hurry, register now to avoid disappointment
see ya there!

let's talk about it

good lunch with ben, ccube, jamie, cs & cheong
mostly talking about klim'06 lah
small world, used to work in the same place with ccube
ccube best marathon time was 3.30 something
something that i can only dream of

1st run after klim'06

did 5 laps
by the time i met aeow
he already did 4 laps, each below 7 mins!
so his 5th lap he just take it easy
running with me lah
for klim, aeow completed 21km in 2hours 06mins
thats bcoz he was not prepared otherwise
he should be able to run 1hour 40 something

ronnie was running the opposite direction
doing fak something, preparing some orange thing

by the time draco join me, it was my last lap
draco had cramps after the 35km during his
maiden klim'06 marathon and
he also had chaffing despite wearing tights, ouch

ronnie, mrs ronnie & i were chatting at der bench
we were talking about funny things that happened
during the klim'06

klim'06 race report

thank you
firstly i have to thank cheong for getting me to the starting line and
a big hand to the organisers for a well organised race except for 1 big problem, pls read on

have not being running for at least 4 weeks due to many reasons/excuses
thoughts of running 21km was very painful, especially a cramp prone person like me
during the race week i ran from mon to thu about 6 to 8km each run
with so little mileage and no long runs the only logical thing to do was run easy

on sat nite i told myself i'll do a last minute check on my preparations once
my 2 sons and my wife is asleep, i think i fell asleep before my sons!
the moment i opened my eyes i was in a panic state
time check 5.20am whew what a relief
did the necessary and was out the door immediately
later realise i forgot to put on my time chip & ion bands

there seems to be so much wind in my stomach
was burping a lot and even almost vomit before reaching the starting line
met cheong, cs, kenneth, jessica & ow
cheong put me at ease and said that the wind was probably due to anxiety,
just relax and it should be ok

free loo
my plan was to tag cheong, as he is nice company & his pacing is just right for me
i even tag along to the dataran merdeka basement car park loo before the race
there were 2 loo attendants, 1 collecting the 20 cents fee & the other making sure u pay the fee
they were very strict, some runners gestured they did not carry any coins/money, the attendant
quickly replied that the free loo was upstairs, i wondered, free loo? where?
later many were seen using the free loo throughout the race, behind the bushes and so on
same as last year they use the huge drums to set the race mood at the starting point
however last years beat was more encouraging but i guess its better than none
we started at 6.30am, cheong, cs & i ran together, chatting & joking as usual

the big problem
all was well until we collected our power gels
there was no water at the water station right after the gel station
i shouted out loud 'what the hell, how come no water ah?'
i saw some runners drinking from bottles left on the road by earlier runners
desperate, i did the same
and if my wife finds out she probably nag me for the rest of my life
as i am writing this report, i am coughing and feel a sore throat coming
hopefully its not because of the water i drank from whoever you are! eewww

my hopes of having water at the rest of the stations was gone
and the end is when i need water the most
but fortunately as it turned out only that station had no water
the rest had plenty of water and 100plus
good job organisers! insert applause here

h2231
as i was enjoying the atmosphere & running easy along
a man, looking pretty old, overtook me
i followed him, he seems interesting, most old people do
a girl was stretching probably due to cramps
the old man shouted words of encouragement
i shouted 'nice legs'
once a safe ear away from the girl the old man laughed
and we started chatting
he is from singapore & 65 this year!

finish
nearing the last few kms i was so glad that there were plenty of water/100plus
stopped at every station and enjoyed 2 cups while walking
traffic control was also good throughout the race, insert applause
finished in 2hours 21minutes 53seconds gun clock time
had cereal & 100plus, stalls well organised, no need to queue, insert applause
i had to rush off, was not able to enjoy the rest of the goodies provided
and also miss the chit chat with the rest of wonderful runners
